IN MEMORY OF CSI: MIAMI'S TIM SPEEDLE

You were young, beautiful and bold,
Bright like a piece of the purest gold
And warm like a glass of the finest wine.
Now my days feel rainy and cold
For I know your presence no longer will shine.

Your gun had failed you once before
But thanks to the vest you were just sore
And I was relieved that you came to no harm
For having neglected your firearm.

You had not cleaned it like you should
But promptly promised thenceforth you would
When a friend urged you to take better care of it
And another handed you a cleaning kit.

But you did not follow their precious advice
And for that you paid the ultimate price.
Their words of wisdom too soon you forgot,
You did not learn the lesson taught,
Wasted a priceless second chance
And in a moment of chaos again you were shot
When a new misfire caused you to glance.

Only this time there was no vest,
So the bullet went right through your chest
And bled my heart just like a knife
When it took away my Speedle's life

If I remember correctly, I wrote this one shortly before I wrote Celebrating Speed's Life.
It makes reference to an earlier episode when Speed made exactly the same mistake that would eventually cost him his life.
At the time, when I finished a poem - despite the satisfaction of finding the right line, the right rhyme, the right rhythm - there was always this urge to start a new one.
When I read this poem now, I feel like I might have already exhausted the theme and ended up with a poem that is less engaging than the others.
