SPEED'S AUTOPSY

Like a Mother mourning her dead son
Cut down in his prime by a cruel gun,
On her table she laid his earthly remains
And when she so wanted to let him rest
She had to open the bullet-pierced shirt
To wash from his no longer heaving chest
The blood no longer flowing through his veins
And thought how bad he must have hurt
When he was caught by the deadly shot
And fell on the very same spot.

And in that dark and gloomy place
Before she swabbed his face,
She caressed his features now so pale
Wishing he would wake up as in a fairytale.
And when she removed his boot
From his lifeless foot
And held his unmoving hand
To check for residue under his fingernail
It was more than she could stand
And she could not help but softly wail.

And when she finally cut through the skin
Of the one who was like kin,
She felt as if the careful slash
Had stabbed through her own flesh
And as she wished it wasn’t true

She cried, and she died a little too.

I remember reading somewhere that when Rory asked for his character to be written out, he wasn't too pleased with the kind of death they came up with. I don't recall his exact words, but I think it had something to do with it not being very realistic that an expert in forensic science - necessarily thorough minded - would make such a careless mistake as not cleaning his gun (especially twice).
For me, that wasn't the most unrealistic part of the episode. After all, even in real life, what often makes a death all the more tragic is how easily it could have been avoided. Besides, I didn't feel it was that out of character with Speedle's (sometimes excessively) laid-back attitude.
What I did feel was unrealistic was that Alexx would be allowed to perform the autopsy (even if it was just a formality), since being his colleague/friend, she would certainly be emotionally too close.
That being said, however, it's still an emotionally very powerful moment for the viewer, especially because Khandi Alexander always portrayed Alexx as being very empathic towards the victims, even talking to the dead bodies (which doesn't happen with Speed because she is naturally too emotionally overwhelmed), and very maternal towards her colleagues/friends.
It was that powerful emotion that inspired me to write this poem.
